Alejandro Betancourt Lopez is the CEO of BANCOOP and a motivational speaker. He’s been working to start profitable businesses in developing countries for the past 20 years. Through Alex’s efforts, many people have been able to improve their lives by seizing opportunities through innovation and entrepreneurship.
In 2008, he left a job at a large multinational bank to start BANCOOP. This microfinance company uses innovative financial tools to provide small loans to rural communities to create economic growth and employment. Before this, Alex was the Marketing Manager at Banco de Bogota S.A., where he succeeded in building the company’s branch network from 40 to over 1,000 branches.
Alejandro Betancourt Lopez has been a consultant to the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, United Nations Global Compact Network, United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), MAVI Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, and Microsoft Corporation. He also serves as an advisor to Bogota’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Alex is involved with several organizations that support entrepreneurship. He is a member of the Steering Committee for the Next Billion Initiative at the World Economic Forum. Alejandro Betancourt Lopez is also a member of the Rotary International Entrepreneurship Club, a national advisory board for Ashoka, and an advisory board member of the Maples Foundation.
Philanthropy is also a focus of his life. He’s been an active member of the Clinton Global Initiative. He gives back to the community by donating time and money to organizations like SOS Children, USAID International Volunteer Program, Tzu Chi Foundation, and more. Alex can use his previous experience as a hedge fund manager to provide small loans to individuals who cannot obtain credit from mainstream banks.
